First Eggs!

November 18, 2011 By RDG

Brown And Speckled Egg
It doesn’t get any fresher than this.

Egg production has begun in my back yard egg factory. Two of our hens laid their first eggs today. As you can see in the picture one of the eggs is brown and the other is brown with speckling. I think these eggs came from the Rhode Island Reds.

Egg Laying Starts At Five And A Half Months

The flock is made up of ten hens and three roosters that arrived as day old chicks on the first of June. That makes it about five and a half months before they started laying.

I was beginning to wonder if the chickens would lay before spring. The days are getting shorter and shorter and I have not yet put a light in their chicken coop.  This milestone will provide the motivation I need to install a light in the coop, thereby encouraging more egg laying.

Eggs Are Delicious And Nutritious

Blueberry Smoothy
Fresh eggs provide a nutrition boost for this smoothie.

I am looking forward to eating more tasty and nutritious eggs in the future. These first two made it into a blueberry smoothie made with yoghurt and sweetened with honey.
